Good News Chicago
May 27th, 2009Welcome to Good News Community Church United Church of Christ
We are located in Roger Park one block north of the last stop on the CTA red line but we are not the last stop for good news. As a multicultural and multigenerational congregation full of real people and extended family our services are catered to proclaim good news to a diverse population. We are a casual community of faith that is sustained by our relationship with God and with each other. At Good News you will find that all of God’s people are welcomed. Our music and teachings communicate the complexities of daily living as well as embracing hope for the journey.
Good News Community Church was founded by several Northwestern students who wanted to have some concrete expressions of their faith. They were drawn to communal living as a means of deepening one’s faith. They had a “preferential option for the poor” and an interest in working with people in these areas of housing, job counseling, and economic development. Out of these early yearnings and prayers came the beginnings of Good News Community Church. Services were held in Nancy & Joe Gatlins’ home. The church evolved to two worship services, one English speaking and the other Spanish. The church was officially incorporated in 1979 and we are presently affiliated with the United Church of Christ.
They Good News Community Church had a big vision for ministry. They purchased property, started a school, and organized a choir. They began having a meal with the community that evolved into Good News Community Kitchen which now serves hot meals every day of the year. With its purchased property, Good News provides space to Good News Literacy Program and Howard Area Community Center Alternative School. The church building became and continues today as the hub for community meetings and activities.
Good News has always been in the community and it has always been on the side of those who are most oppressed and marginalized by society. Good News today recognizes that people are poor in many ways. If you are looking for an authentic place where people are real, community is formed, and the potential exist to be transformed by God’s love and care, then we believe there is a place for you here.
We were here yesterday and we are present today. Come visit us!
